The Ups and Downs of Elevator Service

November 2, 2017

Lifts and elevators of all descriptions have a simple job to do: safely transport people between different levels. As such we take their ability to do this for granted... until they fail that is. Let’s take a look at the importance of lift and elevator service and what goes into keeping them going up and down.

All lifts and elevators require servicing

As with cars, we use lifts everyday and expect them to perform flawlessly. They combine structural and mechanical engineering with electronic componentry – all of which can wear over time. So, it’s important to remember, that like our cars, lifts all require scheduled servicing to keep them operating soundly.

Scheduled servicing achieves three things:

  • Keeps the product in excellent working condition, preventing unexpected and unwelcomed breakdowns
  • Ensures owners stay compliant with their warranty conditions
  • Prolongs the life of the product

How frequently should servicing take place?

Service intervals vary from one product to another and also depend on what environment they perform in, what loads they carry and their frequency of use.

Elevators and lifts in commercial settings need to be serviced in accordance with the Building Compliance Schedule, which usually means every six months. A Safety Inspection Certificate must be issued annually by an Independently Qualified Person (IQP).

Residential lifts and elevators have a much easier life and their maintenance schedule reflects this. Indoor products need to be serviced once a year, while outdoor stair lifts should be serviced every six months due to their exposure to the elements.

Manufacturers like Vestner provide a recommended service schedule for each product they offer. This usually goes hand in hand with the warranty, so it pays to be aware of this and adhere to it.

What is involved in a scheduled service?

There are several types of service contracts when it comes to large commercial elevators:

  • Survey and Report – inspection and report on condition, but no maintenance or repairs
  • Oil and Grease – lubrication and minor adjustment
  • Full Maintenance – total care of elevator equipment with no additional costs

Smaller commercial and residential lifts and elevators aren’t as complicated and have a lighter workload, so require less involved upkeep. Nonetheless, scheduled services completed by companies like Vestner include:

  • A thorough inspection of the product’s structural components and operational functions
  • Scrutinisation of the way the product interacts with its surrounds: where it’s mounted and what condition the surrounding environment is in
  • Evaluation of the lift and surrounds in order to create a modernisation and/or replacement plan, allowing clients to consider future changes and the related costs and work involved

Who can perform servicing work?

It’s essential the person carrying out service or repair work has the correct training and the necessary knowledge of the product and any applicable compliance requirements. This keeps everyone on the right side of the law, ensures the owner receives a high level of workmanship, and meets the warranty stipulations.

Vestner have a nationwide network of suitably qualified subcontractors we know and trust to complete scheduled servicing and emergency repairs on our commercial and residential lift and elevator products.

We also offer service agreements for all of our products. To hear more about these or to chat about your servicing options in general, drop us a line.
